Our commitment
SAAM wants this website to be usable by as many people as possible, including adoptees, family members and professionals using screen readers, keyboard navigation, voice control, or browser zoom and text-resizing. Accessibility isn't an add-on for us — a campaign about being heard should itself be easy to read and navigate.
What we've built in
- Semantic HTML throughout (proper headings, landmarks, and lists), so screen readers can navigate the structure of each page.
- A "skip to content" link at the very start of every page, letting keyboard users jump straight past the navigation.
- Visible focus states on every interactive element — links, buttons, form fields — so keyboard navigation is easy to follow.
- Colour and contrast chosen to remain readable against the site's dark background, including for the muted secondary text.
- A responsive layout that works down to small phone screens without content being cut off or requiring horizontal scrolling.
- The FAQ page uses native, keyboard-operable disclosure controls rather than a custom widget, so it works with assistive technology by default.
- Descriptive link text and alt text on meaningful images; purely decorative illustrations are marked so screen readers skip over them.
- Respect for the "reduce motion" setting in your operating system or browser, for anyone sensitive to animation.
- A plain-text print stylesheet, so statements and publications print cleanly without the dark background.
What we're aiming for
We're aiming to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. This statement describes our approach and intentions — it isn't a claim of full, independently audited compliance. We haven't yet had this site formally tested against WCAG by an accessibility specialist, and we treat this as ongoing work rather than a box that's been ticked once and forgotten.
Known limitations
We want to be upfront about the parts of the site that may not be fully accessible yet:
- The Campaign Supporting Document and other PDFs are provided as downloadable files. Some may not be fully optimised for screen readers, particularly where they contain complex layouts inherited from their original design.
- Embedded content from third-party platforms (such as YouTube, when linked) is governed by that platform's own accessibility features, which are outside our control.
- Some external links point to government and parliamentary websites whose accessibility we can't guarantee.
If you rely on assistive technology and hit a barrier anywhere on this site — including with a downloadable document — please let us know using the details below, and we'll do what we can to help directly, as well as fix the underlying issue.
Reporting an accessibility issue
If you experience any difficulty using this website, please get in touch or email contact@saam.org.uk, describing the page and the issue you ran into. We aim to respond within a few working days.
